AmFam Champ primed for exciting finish on Sunday
Estaban Toledo enters the final round of the American Family Insurance Championship Sunday with a one-shot lead over defending champion Fred Couples and three others. Eight other players are two shots back, including Madison’s Jerry Kelly.
Toledo cruised the University Ridge Golf Course Saturday in six-under-par 66, for a two-round total of nine under par.
“I made only one bogey in two days, and when I looked at the leaderboard on the last hole, I didn't know I was tied for first. I was shocked a little bit,” Toledo said. “But you know what, there’s a lot of guys right next to me, so we'll see what happens tomorrow.”
Tied for second with Couples at eight under par are David Toms, Kent Jones and Billy Mayfair. Joining Kelly another shot back is Brad Bryant, Mark Calcavecchia, Glen Day, Paul Goydos, Bernhard Langer, Scott McCarron and Joey Sindelar.
First-round leader and tournament host Steve Stricker birdied the 18th hole, his only birdie for the day, to shoot a two-over-par 74. He is three shots back of the leader, and is tied for 14th.
“It’s going to take something special for me being three shots back,” Stricker said. “I'm going to have to put up a good round, probably something similar to what I did the first day (eight-under-par 64) or maybe even a little bit better.
The championship attracted record single-day attendance thanks in part to a celebrity foursome of Lee Trevino, Andy North, Brett Favre and Derek Jeter. The team of North and Favre won the good-natured competition, earning a $25,000 donation by the Steve Stricker American Family Insurance Foundation to American Family Children’s Hospital in their honor.
Final-round play of the American Family Insurance Championship begins at 9 a.m. (CT) Saturday, with players starting on the first and 10th tees.

Public parking update for Sunday, June 24
Due to soggy conditions, free public parking will continue at off-site locations Sunday. Fans will be shuttled free, to the championship’s front entrance. Off-site parking will begin at Verona High School at 300 Richard Street, Verona, and Badger Ridge Middle School at 740 N. Main Street, Verona. When those lots are full, fans will be diverted to other locations including Epic, Verona, Redden Soccer Complex and West Madison Bible Church. Electronic signs will provide directions. Free shuttle service will begin at 5:30 a.m., with tournament gates opening at 7 a.m., and continue for the entire day. Public parking plans for Sunday will be determined Saturday afternoon. Off-site parking plans will also continue for volunteers. Sponsors, caddies and media will park on site in their normal locations.
